We talk a lot about investing in yourself. A new course. A better supplement stack. A coach. A morning routine that starts at 5am. Most of it is consumption dressed up as growth. Real self-investment is slower, less photogenic, and significantly more uncomfortable. I have been thinking about what that actually looks like — for me, for Root + Renew, and for the version of my life I am actively building. Here is what I have landed on.

THE DEEP DIVE

What It Really Means to Invest in Yourself

There is a difference between spending on yourself and investing in yourself. Spending feels good immediately. Investing often does not feel like anything for a while and then changes everything.

Here are the forms of self-investment that actually move the needle:

💆‍♀️ Invest in Your Mental Health

Therapy is the highest-leverage investment most people are not making. Not because it feels good in the moment but because it changes the operating system. The way you make decisions, handle conflict, process failure, and show up in relationships all runs on that system. A weekly session costs less than most people spend on supplements monthly. The ROI is incomparable.

If therapy is not accessible right now, journaling consistently, reading books that challenge your thinking, and having honest conversations with people you trust are all forms of this investment. The goal is the same: understanding yourself well enough to make better choices.

👩‍💻 Invest in a Skill That Compounds

Learning something that gets more valuable over time is one of the most underrated forms of self-investment. Writing. Public speaking. A second language. Financial literacy. The skill does not matter as much as the principle: choose something that builds on itself, that opens doors over years not weeks, and that nobody can take away from you.

The mistake most people make is waiting until they need the skill to start learning it. Start before you need it. That is what investment means.

🤝 Invest in Your Relationships

This is the one nobody puts in a wellness newsletter because it cannot be affiliate linked. The people around you are the single biggest factor in who you become. Multiple decades of research from Harvard's longest-running study on adult development points to the same conclusion: the quality of your relationships determines the quality of your life more than any other variable.

Investing in relationships means showing up for people consistently, being honest even when it is uncomfortable, choosing your inner circle deliberately, and giving your best attention to the people who matter most rather than your leftover energy.

💰 Invest in Your Financial Health

Financial stress is one of the most significant and least discussed barriers to wellbeing. You cannot fully rest when you are anxious about money. You cannot make good long-term decisions when you are in survival mode. Investing in your financial literacy — understanding where your money goes, building a basic savings habit, learning how investing works — is a form of self-care that pays dividends in every other area of your life.

Start small. One book. One habit. One conversation with someone who knows more than you. The point is to begin.

🌱 Invest in Your Physical Foundation

Not optimization, foundation. Sleep, consistent movement, and hydration are not wellness trends. They are the baseline from which everything else operates. When this foundation is solid, your mood is more stable, your decision-making is sharper, your resilience is higher, and everything else on this list becomes easier.

This is also the area where less is consistently more. A 30-minute walk every day beats an aggressive gym routine you abandon in three weeks. Consistency is the investment. Intensity is optional.

🧘‍♀️ Invest in Your Environment

Your environment shapes your behavior more than your willpower does. The space you work in, the content you consume, the people you spend most of your time with. All of it is either working for you or against you. Auditing your environment periodically and making deliberate edits is one of the most effective and most overlooked forms of self-investment.

This does not require money. It requires attention. What in your environment is quietly draining you? What would cost nothing to change?

The Bottom Line: Real self-investment is not a purchase. It is a practice. It is the decision to keep showing up for the version of yourself you are trying to build, even before the returns are visible. Especially then.

Finally, Skincare That Boosts NAD+ At the Source

For decades, skincare has focused on aesthetic results. But we started by asking a different question: what if instead of trying to preserve our skin's youth, we prioritized optimizing our skin's function? That's how Aramore’s  NAD+ skincare was born.

Developed by Harvard & MIT scientists, Aramore is a skincare system based on skin’s performance, not just its appearance. NAD+ production slows down significantly as we age, and this causes all the telltale science of aging.

Aramore is the only skincare formulated to help skin produce NAD+ like much younger skin would. The result? Skin that’s stronger, firmer,  and more resilient, that not only looks better, but stays healthier over time.
