September has quietly become wellness culture’s second January, complete with new routines, workout plans, productivity challenges and pressure to suddenly get your entire life together. This week, we’re looking at what’s actually worth resetting after summer, why doing less might be the better wellness strategy, five things we’re taking into September, and a reminder that your routine should support your life, not become your life.

MONTHLY RECAP

Your September Reset Needs Fewer Rules

There is something genuinely nice about September. In the U.S., Labor Day unofficially closes the summer chapter, vacations slow down, schedules become more predictable and getting back into some kind of routine starts sounding appealing again. The problem is not wanting a fresh start. It’s how quickly wellness culture turns a fresh start into a complete personal renovation.

Suddenly we’re supposed to meal prep, hit 10,000 steps, increase our protein, lift three times a week, take Pilates, meditate, journal, fix our sleep, organize our supplements and somehow become the kind of person who prepares tomorrow’s breakfast before going to bed at 9:30.

That is not a reset. That is another job.

There is also a noticeable shift happening among younger wellness consumers. Gen Z and millennials are still deeply interested in health, but there is growing fatigue around constantly keeping up with the latest wellness trend. The basics are starting to look appealing again: sleeping enough, moving regularly, eating well, managing stress and having a life outside of optimizing all of the above.

So instead of giving yourself another list of things to accomplish this September, try editing the routine you already have.

Start with what actually makes a difference. Maybe getting back to a consistent bedtime would improve your week more than adding another workout. Maybe cooking three dinners at home is more realistic than spending Sunday preparing 15 containers of food. Maybe the exercise routine you can consistently do is more useful than the perfect one you abandon after two weeks.

Bring back something you genuinely missed. Summer disrupts routines, but not every disrupted habit deserves to return. Think about the things that actually made you feel better before summer. Your morning walk, weekly Pilates class, cooking, reading before bed or running with a friend. Pick one.

Stop buying the aesthetic of the habit. A September reset does not require a new planner, workout wardrobe, supplement stack or wellness gadget. If something solves a real problem, great. If it mainly makes you feel like you’re becoming the type of person who has her life together, maybe give it 48 hours.

And finally, keep something from summer. The long dinners, outdoor workouts, spontaneous plans, iced coffee walks and slower weekends do not need to disappear because September arrived.

A good reset should make your life easier to live. If maintaining it becomes its own full-time project, it probably needs another edit.

Take the Reset Somewhere Else

Sometimes changing your routine has less to do with adding another habit and more to do with changing your environment.

That is one reason we love Kindred, a home-swapping community that lets members stay in real homes around the world using credits. Think actual neighborhoods, kitchens you can cook in and enough space to settle into a destination rather than feeling like you’re simply passing through it.

If a September weekend somewhere new sounds better than another self-improvement challenge, we support that.

CURRENTLY LOVING

Five things we’re taking into September

🌙 Protect your sleep. The boring wellness advice remains some of the best wellness advice.

🎯 Choose three priorities. Your routine does not need twelve daily non-negotiables.

🍝 Put something fun on the calendar. A healthy life should contain things you actually look forward to.

🛒 Question the purchase. You probably already own what you need to restart most habits.

☀️ Keep something from summer. September is a transition, not a personality transplant.

WEEKLY THOUGHT

Instagram post

I love the feeling of September. A little more structure, fresh motivation and the sense that you can return to whatever got lost somewhere between June and August.

But this year, we’re skipping the pressure to become a completely different person by Tuesday.

Sleep a little better. Move your body. Cook something. See your friends. Keep the parts of summer you loved.

That’s enough of a reset.

See you Wednesday!

Valerie
