If your to-do list feels like a never-ending treadmill (but somehow you’re still not doing enough?), you might be stuck in the hustle trap. This week, we’re talking about redefining success—because burning yourself out for a gold medal in exhaustion isn’t the flex we think it is.

And if you're already feeling the burnout creeping in, don’t worry—we’ve got your back with a Practical Guide: The 24-Hour Recovery Protocol (more on that below).

But before we dive in, this week’s sponsor is DIRTEA. DIRTEA crafts mushroom-powered drinks and gummies blended with essential vitamins for people like us seeking sharper focus, a calm mind, and lasting energy. The Focus Powder & the Cacao Superblend have been a couple of my favorites lately!

What's Inside

When Hustle Culture is Just Toxic

Ah, hustle culture. The badge of honor for running on five hours of sleep, chugging coffee like it’s a sport, and responding to emails at 11:58 PM with “Sent from my iPhone—sorry for any typos!” Sound familiar?

Somewhere along the way, we swapped balance for busyness, and now we’re tired-tired. But what if we told you that doing less could actually make you more successful? This week, we’re diving into the toxic cycle of overworking, why it’s so hard to stop, and how to actually redefine success without sacrificing your sanity.

The Productivity Olympics: Are You Competing?

You know that feeling when you finish a big project, sit back for exactly two minutes, and then immediately think, “Okay, what’s next?” If yes, congrats—you’ve been drafted into the Productivity Olympics.

Hustle culture has convinced us that success is measured in hours worked, emails answered, and how many side projects we can juggle before we crash. If you’re not constantly grinding, are you even trying?

Let’s be real—stress isn’t going anywhere. You can optimize your calendar, batch your emails, and try to “romanticize” your morning routine all you want, but life will still find ways to throw chaos at you.

The real issue? Most of us are terrible at recovering from stress. We grind all day, call it “productivity,” and then wonder why we wake up exhausted. The solution isn’t just managing stress—it’s training your body and mind to bounce back faster with quality sleep.

Spoiler: Yes. And trying shouldn’t mean dying (emotionally or physically) from overwork.

Why We Can’t Stop (Even When We Know We Should)

Here’s the thing: hustle culture is addictive. It feeds off validation. We love the dopamine hit from “You’re killing it!” texts and the bragging rights of being so busy. Sometimes, it’s not the we enjoy it but rather it’s ingrained in company culture, especially in Silicon Valley. If you aren’t working long hours, all of a sudden you’re seen as a ‘not a team player’. But here’s what they don’t tell you:

  • More work ≠ better work. Studies show that after a certain point (hi, 50+ hour weeks), productivity actually declines.

  • Rest isn’t laziness, it’s strategy. Athletes don’t train 24/7—they rest so they can perform better. Your brain? Same deal.

  • Your worth is not tied to your output. Being busy is not a personality trait. You’re a whole person outside of your calendar.

Breaking the Cycle: How to Redefine Success (Without Overworking Yourself)

So how do we unlearn the toxic hustle mindset?

Redefine success in terms of impact, not hours. More isn’t always better—focus on the quality of your work, not just the quantity.

Unsubscribe from the Busy Olympics. Stop glorifying packed schedules. Having space in your day doesn’t mean you’re slacking—it means you’re smart.

Protect your energy like it’s your paycheck. If your schedule is constantly draining you, it’s time to make rest non-negotiable.

Measure progress differently. Instead of asking, Did I do enough today? ask, Did I move in the right direction today?

⚖️ Finding Balance: How to Hustle Without Losing Yourself

Let’s be real—quitting hustle culture entirely isn’t always an option especially in entrepreneurship. You have goals, responsibilities, and maybe even that little voice inside that likes being productive. And that’s okay. The key isn’t to stop working hard—it’s to stop working unsustainably hard. Here’s how to find a balance between ambition and actually enjoying your life:

1️⃣ Define Your Non-Negotiables: Before your calendar fills up with work, decide what must come first. Is it your morning run? A no-laptop dinner? Eight hours of sleep? Whatever keeps you sane—lock it in. Work should fit around your life, not the other way around.

2️⃣ Schedule Rest Like a Meeting: If you wait until you’re “free” to rest, it’ll never happen. Block off downtime the same way you schedule work calls. And no, scrolling LinkedIn while lying on the couch doesn’t count as real rest.

3️⃣ Ditch the “Always On” Mentality: Just because your phone is within reach doesn’t mean you have to respond to that email at 10 p.m. Set clear boundaries (for yourself and others) about when you’re actually available.

4️⃣ Prioritize Deep Work Over Busy Work: Being busy doesn’t mean being effective. Cut out unnecessary meetings, batch similar tasks together, and give yourself distraction-free focus time. Less wasted time = fewer late nights.

5️⃣ Redefine What Productivity Means: Hustle culture says success is about how much you do. But what if it’s about how well you live? Shift your focus to impact, progress, and fulfillment—not just checking boxes.

6️⃣ Celebrate Breaks, Not Just Hustle: Your brain needs recovery time to function at its best. Instead of glorifying all-nighters, celebrate when you actually rest. Because guess what? Rested you = better, smarter, and more creative you.

At the end of the day, you don’t have to choose between ambition and well-being. The real flex? Mastering both. 🚀

🏢 Balancing Hustle Culture When You Work for a Company

Working in a fast-paced company can make it feel like slowing down isn’t an option—but it is. The key? Setting boundaries without sacrificing your ambition. Here’s how:

1️⃣ Set Clear Work Hours (And Stick to Them): Just because Slack is still buzzing at 9 PM doesn’t mean you have to respond. Define your work hours and respect them—because if you don’t, no one else will.

2️⃣ Stop Saying Yes to Everything: Being the “go-to person” is great—until you’re drowning in work. Before agreeing to another task, ask: Does this align with my role and bandwidth? If not, push back (professionally, of course).

3️⃣ Take Your Breaks (Yes, Really): Lunch at your desk isn’t a flex. Step away, get fresh air, and give your brain time to reset. You’ll actually be more productive after.

4️⃣ Use Your PTO—All of It: You earned it. Take it. Full stop.

5️⃣ Advocate for Yourself: If the workload is unsustainable, speak up. Overwork isn’t a badge of honor, and burnout doesn’t make you a better employee—it just makes you exhausted.

Research shows that even thinking about work detracts from your ability to recover from it, and the mere presence of your mobile phone distracts you, leaving you unable to detach from “the office.”

Final Thought: You Are Not a Machine

The world will not end if you take a break. Your success is not measured by how exhausted you are. And real talk? No one’s handing out trophies for Most Emails Sent at Midnight.

So step back, recharge, and trust that sometimes, doing less is actually the smartest move you can make.

🛠️ Practical Guide: The 24-Hour Recovery Protocol

Feeling fried from too many late nights, back-to-back meetings, and an inbox that never quits? If your brain is foggy, your body feels run down, and you can’t remember the last time you weren’t tired, it’s time for a full system reset.

Here’s a science-backed, step-by-step recovery day to help you break out of the hustle spiral and recharge—because rest isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity.

☀️ Morning:

  • Sunlight exposure (10 min): Sets your circadian rhythm.

  • Hydration + minerals: Start with water + LMNT (USA) or Noordcode electrolytes (EU).

  • 5-minute nervous system reset: Try box breathing (4-4-4-4 count).

🕛 Midday:

  • Movement, not just workouts: Go for a walk after lunch (15 min).

  • Mental reset: Switch from “doing” to “being” for at least 10 min (meditate, journal, or just stare at the sky—yes, really).

🌙 Evening:

  • Magnesium or adaptogens: Calm your nervous system before bed.

  • Sleep tracking challenge: Try to hit 7.5+ hours of quality sleep. Use a wearable like Oura Ring or a WHOOP band and track how breathwork, movement, and recovery change your stress levels over time.

That’s a wrap! Remember, success isn’t about how exhausted you are—it’s about how sustainable your hustle is. Work hard, but don’t forget to live too. Your goals will wait, but burnout won’t.

See you next Sunday—until then, work smart, rest hard, and don’t let the Productivity Olympics steal your peace. 🚀

Until next time,
Valerie
