🍂 Happy Sunday, Wellness Rewind readers!
Life has a funny way of shaking things up just when we think we’ve got it all figured out. Whether it’s canceled plans, changing seasons, or unexpected shifts in the world around us, we’re constantly reminded that adaptability isn’t just a skill—it’s a way of living. In this week’s edition, let’s dive into what it really means to go with the flow, find joy in the unplanned, and embrace the growth that comes from life’s twists and turns.
Go with the Flow: Adapting to Life’s Unexpected Changes
Life loves to throw us curveballs, doesn’t it? Just when you think you’ve got everything figured out, something shifts, and suddenly you’re in uncharted territory. It’s in these unpredictable moments that we’re faced with a choice: resist the change, or lean in and see where it takes us.
Recently, I experienced this firsthand with my half marathon plans getting canceled due to the DANA and floods in Spain, which led to a surprising and rewarding pivot. And as we navigate other changes—whether it’s the evolving political climate, the shifting of the seasons, or unexpected turns in our personal lives—it’s becoming clearer to me that adaptability isn’t just a skill; it’s a way of thriving.
Let’s dive into what it really means to go with the flow, embrace change, and find those little moments of joy and growth hiding within the chaos. Life may not always go as planned, but sometimes, the most beautiful surprises lie just off the beaten path.
Half Marathon Canceled? No Big Deal! Pivoting with Purpose 🏃♀️
This weekend, I was all set to run my first half marathon—a milestone I’d been training toward for weeks, logging countless hours, early mornings, and miles on the road. But, in an unexpected twist, the race was canceled almost at midnight on Friday.
Just before that, I’d been talking with a friend who’s a professional football (soccer) player for one of the La Liga teams here in Madrid. When I think about it, it’s funny that he’d been giving me a pep talk about how so much of this is mental and that I needed to get in the right mindset. Then, right after our conversation, I saw the email and the Instagram post announcing the cancellation. That initial wave of disappointment hit hard. It’s never easy when something you’ve worked so hard for suddenly slips away.
But instead of letting the setback define my weekend, I chose to pivot. I signed up to run a 10K instead, joining the Pomona Running Club for the Derbi de los Aficionados. Coincidently, a running club friend could no longer make the race and offered up her bib. This was my chance to embrace adaptability, to channel my training into a new experience and make the most of what was still possible.
And you know what? Not only did I finish with a time of 47:12 (at a 4:43/km pace), but I also set a new personal record not only for my 10k but also for my 5K (23:19 at a 4:40/km pace)! This experience taught me that sometimes, when things don’t go as planned, there’s still room for new victories and unexpected joys. Adapting to this change didn’t just salvage my training—it gave me a fresh sense of accomplishment and renewed my passion for running.
The lesson here? Life may disrupt our plans, but we still have the power to make meaningful moments in the face of the unexpected. It’s not about clinging to what was supposed to be but finding the beauty in what is.
Adapting to the Political Climate in the U.S. 🌍
The political landscape is another area where many of us are feeling the push to adapt. With Trump newly elected, emotions are running high—some of us may feel hopeful, others disappointed, and many are simply uncertain about what lies ahead. Navigating this new chapter is challenging, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the weight of potential changes. Yet, this is the beauty of our democracy at work, a process that allows for diverse perspectives and voices.
For me, adapting to political shifts is about finding balance. I want to stay informed and involved without letting the constant news cycle dictate my mental and emotional state. Setting boundaries has been key—whether it’s limiting screen time or choosing my news sources carefully, I aim to reduce stress and stay focused on positive actions. By concentrating on what I can control—supporting my community, advocating for causes I believe in, and engaging in healthy discussions—I’m able to stay engaged without letting the political climate consume me.
In the spirit of transparency, while I am a registered Republican, my views are moderate, and I voted blue this year. It’s a reminder that adaptability isn’t just about coping with change; it’s about staying true to ourselves and finding ways to contribute meaningfully, even in uncertain times.
Adapting doesn’t mean we have to give up our values or remain silent on issues that matter. Instead, it’s about finding strength in our beliefs, staying resilient, and supporting our communities in constructive ways.
Embracing Seasonal Change with an Open Heart 🍂
Nature has a gentle way of reminding us to adapt, to slow down, and to welcome change. November often marks a time of transition—the days grow shorter, the air turns crisp, and there’s an instinct to turn inward, reflect, and recharge.
For me, this time of year means leaning into cozy routines like journaling, meditating, and adding more restorative movement to my weekly schedule. I used to resist these slower rhythms, clinging to the high-energy habits of summer. But I’ve learned that embracing these subtle changes can be deeply nourishing, bringing a sense of harmony with my environment and honoring my body’s natural rhythms.
Sometimes, adapting doesn’t require big adjustments; it’s often about making small shifts to align with where we are right now. Whether it’s lighting a candle, making a warm cup of tea, or taking a few extra moments to reflect, these simple practices remind us of the beauty in slowing down and embracing the moment.
5 Mindset Shifts for Embracing Change and Going with the Flow 🌊
Adapting to life’s unexpected changes often begins with our mindset. Here are five mindset shifts that have helped me embrace unpredictability with more ease and resilience. These shifts can serve as tools to help you navigate any transition, whether big or small, with greater confidence and peace.
Focus on What You Can Control
When life feels uncertain, it’s easy to get caught up in what’s outside our control. Instead, try shifting your focus to what you can influence—your thoughts, actions, and reactions. This empowers you to take meaningful steps forward, even in the face of the unknown.
Embrace Flexibility as a Strength
Flexibility isn’t about being passive or giving up on your goals. It’s about being open to alternate paths and knowing that detours can lead to unexpected rewards. Embrace adaptability as a powerful skill that allows you to handle whatever comes your way with grace.
See Setbacks as Opportunities for Growth
When plans fall apart, it’s easy to feel discouraged. But setbacks often hold hidden lessons and opportunities for growth. Ask yourself, “What can I learn from this?” or “How can I make the most of this new situation?” Viewing challenges as growth opportunities helps turn frustrations into fuel for progress.
Practice Gratitude for the Present Moment
Gratitude can anchor us in the here and now, helping us find joy even in difficult times. By focusing on what we’re grateful for, we create a sense of peace and acceptance that makes adapting to change feel less daunting. Try listing three things you’re grateful for each day to stay grounded.
Cultivate a Beginner’s Mindset
When we approach life with curiosity and openness, we’re better able to embrace the unknown. Cultivating a beginner’s mindset—one that is open to learning and discovery—helps us approach new situations with excitement rather than fear. Remember, every change is an opportunity to grow and experience something new.
Finding Joy in Every Season of Life
Whether it’s a canceled race, a political shift, or the simple arrival of autumn, life is constantly asking us to adapt. And while change can be uncomfortable, it’s also where the most profound growth happens. By embracing these mindset shifts, we can face transitions with resilience, grace, and even a sense of excitement.
So, here’s a little exercise for this week:
Reflect on a recent change that challenged you. How did you respond, and what did you learn from the experience?
Identify one way you can adapt your daily routine or mindset this season. Whether it’s introducing a calming ritual, shifting your focus to gratitude, or practicing flexibility in your plans, make a small change that helps you flow with life.
Celebrate the wins, big and small, that come from going with the flow. Remember, every step forward—even if it’s a pivot—counts toward your growth.
Life may not always follow our plans, but by learning to go with the flow, we can find beauty, resilience, and joy in every phase. Let’s embrace this season of transformation and keep moving forward, one adaptable step at a time.
