In Partnership With

August is here and everyone's launching their systems. Morning pages, habit stacks, protocols designed to make you better by September.

I've been thinking about the difference between a system and a ritual. One burns you out. The other actually grounds you.

So this week in the newsletter I want to talk about what works in August—not what's trendy, but what's real.

OUR MAIN TOPIC

The Rituals That Make August Feel Different

There is a version of August that doesn't require another app, another commitment, or another thing to optimize. One where the reset comes from presence, not protocol.

August is hot. People are traveling. Routines feel soft. This is exactly the moment when rigid systems break and small, intentional rituals win.

Delay everything for the first 20-30 minutes.

Your inbox will still be there. Social media isn't going anywhere. Your to-do list isn't urgent at 7 AM. Start your day with your own thoughts instead of everyone else's.

Your nervous system can feel the difference between starting with intention and starting with reaction. This isn't about willpower or discipline. It's just choosing what comes first. You come first.

Why it works: Your nervous system can feel the difference between starting with intention and starting with reaction. The first thing you consume shapes your entire morning. You get to decide what that is.

Open the blinds and step outside for a few minutes.

Natural light hits different in August. Fresh air is free. Two minutes on your patio or balcony before you sit down changes the entire morning. Your body doesn't need a cold plunge. It needs light and air. That's it.

Why it works: Light and air regulate your circadian rhythm and calm your nervous system before the day even starts. This is biology, not motivation.

Make one intentional beverage and actually enjoy it.

Tea. Coffee. Lemon water. Pick one. Make it. Drink it without doing five other things at the same time. Let this be the moment your day officially starts. Not rushed. Not multitasked. Just you and the thing you're holding. The ritual is in the presence, not the product.

Why it works: The ritual is in the presence, not the product. One full moment of attention signals to your brain that you matter. That your time is worth savoring.

Get dressed before you check your to-do list.

Even if you're staying home. Even if you're not leaving the house. Getting dressed sends a signal to your brain: this day matters. You matter. It's not about looking a certain way. It's about treating yourself like someone whose morning is worth showing up for.

Why it works: Ritual creates momentum. When you treat yourself like someone whose morning is worth showing up for, the rest of the day follows. It's not vanity. It's respect.

Leave five minutes of empty space between waking and beginning.

Don't fill every second. No meditation app required. No gratitude prompt. Just five minutes of nothing. Breathing room. That's where the reset actually happens.

Why it works: Your brain needs a buffer between sleep and task mode. This gap is where presence lives. Not productivity. Just space.

Why these work in August

August is intense. The heat, the pace, the end-of-summer pressure. Heavy routines collapse in this season. But these rituals are light. They work with summer, not against it. They don't require optimization. They just require presence.

A ritual isn't about becoming someone new. It's about honoring the person you already are by starting the day with intention instead of reaction.

The point was always to get somewhere and then actually be there. August is reminding you that you're already here. The reset comes from noticing that.

Stay Somewhere That Actually Lets You Stop

Slowing down is easier when your environment is doing half the work. For Costa Blanca, I chose a Kindred home specifically for the sea views, the genuine quiet, and a terrace where I could sit and do nothing without feeling like I was supposed to be somewhere else. That is what the right space gives you.

Kindred is a curated home exchange network: list your home, earn credits, and stay in beautifully vetted homes anywhere in the world. No nightly fees, only a cleaning fee. Real kitchens, real neighborhoods, real homes chosen by people who actually live there.

Sign up through my link or use code val.alv2 and you will get 5 credits to use toward your first booking.

THE REWIND

Five things for the week.

🌅 Start with light. Blinds open. Outside. Air. Your circadian rhythm responds to this more than any supplement.

One beverage, zero multitasking. This is the ritual. Make it slow.

📵 Email can wait. Your inbox doesn't get first access to your attention. You do.

👕 Get dressed anyway. Signal to yourself that the day matters. It works.

🤍 Five minutes of nothing. Between waking and doing. That's where presence lives.

Here's what I actually believe: your best self in August is the one who stops fighting the season and starts accepting it. Who trades optimization for presence. Who understands that not every month asks for the same thing.

Summer doesn't need you optimized. It needs you here.

See you Wednesday!
